A number of budget multifunction printers are simply all show and no go. They are designed to make you think that you’re getting a great versatile printer for a cheap price, what you actually get is a mediocre printer that costs a fortune your run on printer cartridges. The Epson SX200 is the entry level multifunction printer from Epson and it different from its competitors because it seem to have be design to offer a wide range of features performed to a reasonably good standard. Epson SX200 ink cartridges are different too because instead of using two cartridges the SX200 uses four, one separate cartridges for each of the colours and this means that you only have to change one colour at a time when it runs out. Epson ink cartridges for the SX200 are still costly at £30 a set but this is considerable cheaper that a lot of it competitors. The time it takes from removing the SX200 from it box to making the first print is around 15 minutes, the installation process is extremely easy and thanks to the detailed and clear instructions. The first thing to make an impression is the noise level, the SX200 is certainly not the quietest printer in the world. The next thing to make an impression is the print quality is excellent far better than anything else in this price range and this make sit perfect for printing brochures, photographs as well as all the everyday stuff like text documents and web printing. Printing speed however is not so impressive, with a official 34ppm (pages per minute) rating we had a felling this was too good to be true and it was. In the real world the SX200 is only capable of around 4ppm and where Epson got the 34ppm figure from is anyone’s guess. The SX200’s flat bed scanner performs when on a variety of documents and although colour scans have a slight magenta cast this is easily fix with the photo editing software that comes with the device. The copier is a convenient feature which works with or without a PC and is good for copier small qualities of documents. Overall the Epson SX200 has the edge on its competitors.
